In Northerns we are extremely fortunate to have, at the top end, a number of coaches who are currently, or have been, active at the very highest levels of coaching. However, our focus is not limited only to these high levels. We also have a number of SAHA-accredited facilitators and can regularly present our own coaching courses.
A number of years ago SAHA collaborated with the Dutch hockey association in designing a new qualification and training structure for hockey coaches in South Africa and this has now been in use with good results for some years. The structure provides for training, not only of "beginner" coaches, but also more specialised higher level coaches, by setting different levels.
Level 0 Coaching Course
The Level 0 course is open to anyone aged fourteen or older, regardless of prior experience. It takes about four hours to complete and you need not bring anything, apart from perhaps something to make notes with. As per SA Schools Hockey directive, this course is compulsory for anyone wishing to coach a primary school team. A maximum of 30 people can be accommodated at each course, so advance booking is essential! The cost is R300 per person, preferrably transferred into the NBHA's account prior to the course, but it may be paid in cash at the course. For bank details and office contact numbers, please see the Contact Us page.
Level 1 Coaching Course
The Level 1 course is intended for active coaches wishing to expand their technical knowledge and takes place in two sessions on two different days, with a written assignment to be completed between the two days. All candidates must attend both days. The course is considerably more intensive than the Level 0 course and candidates are required to pass theoretical and practical evaluations before qualifying for certification. For this reason, candidates must meet the following requirements before being accepted on the course:
- Must have attended a Level 0 Course in a previous year.
- Must have experience of coaching 11-a-side hockey for at least one season.
- Must be able to conduct a training session and to take part (as player) in sessions presented by other candidates.
Candidates with proven experience may, in exceptional cases, be allowed to "skip" the Level 0 course or to attend both the Level 0 and Level 1 course in one season, depending on the extent of their experience – each application will be assessed on merit.
A maximum of 12 people can be accommodated at each course, so advance booking is essential! The cost is R400 per person, preferrably transferred into the NBHA's account prior to the course, but it may be paid in cash at the course. For bank details and office contact numbers, please see the Contact Us page.
Goalkeeper Coaching Course
The goalkeeper coaching course is open to coaches aged fourteen or older who wish to enhance their knowledge of goalkeeper coaching in order to more effectively involve and develop their goalkeepers. While it is not a requirement, it is recommended that candidates already have at least a Level 0 Coaching Certificate before attending this course. The course takes about four hours to complete and a maximum of 15 people can be accommodated at each course, so advance booking is essential! The cost is R400 per person, preferrably transferred into the NBHA's account prior to the course, but it may be paid in cash at the course. For bank details and office contact numbers, please see the Contact Us page.
Level 2 Coaching Course
The Level 2 course is aimed at training "High Performance" coaches. As such it is aimed at coaches who want to coach effectively at senior club level up to premier league, schoolboys A league 1st teams, provincial teams and junior national teams. The course represents a very substantial increase in technical level above Level 1 and involves intensive theoretical and practical evaluation of candidates before certification. Coaches applying to attend the Level 2 course must have completed and passed the Level 0 and Level 1 courses in previous years and must be able to do the following:
- Present PowerPoint presentations, including video clips, on given subjects.
- Communicate and ask questions at a high performance level.
- Conduct high performance training sessions on given topics.
- Assess other coaches' sessions.
- Interact and work with other coaches.
The course duration is normally four to five days and the cost varies according to the travelling and accommodation costs of the facilitators. Course cost will be published as soon as a course is arranged with a facilitator.
Level 3 Coaching Course
Level 3 courses are currently attended by invitation only and are administered and presented by SAHA.
